FAQ

How can we help?

Shipping + Local Pickup

Shipping Info

For ready-to-ship items, please allow up to 5 business days for us to process and ship your order. We are a small team and blocking our shipping time helps the studio run efficiently.

When your order is shipped, you will receive a shipping notification email with tracking information.

Local Pickup

Local pickup is available from our studio in South Miami, FL (zip code 33143).

The local pickup option will appear during checkout.

When your order has been processed and is ready for pickup, we will email you to schedule a Pickup Appointment (please check your spam folder!).

Note: Pickups must be scheduled with an appointment.

International Shipping

Shipping is available in the United States only.

We do not currently offer international shipping. We hope to incorporate international shipping in the future.

Packaging Materials

The majority of our shipping materials are made of renewable, recyclable, and compostable materials; most are 100% paper.

We use expandable honeycomb paper to wrap pieces, fluted cardboard to wrap items for extra protection, and brown kraft paper as void fill.

Items are shipped in unwaxed cardboard boxes. We use water-activated tape to seal boxes.

We encourage you to reuse, compost, or recycle the high-quality packing materials your order arrives in.

Returns + Exchanges + Damages

Returns Policy

We want you to be happy with your pottery. If for any reason you would like to return items for refund, you can email us at soula@goldenratioclayworks.com to submit a return request.

Important notes:

- Only new, unused, unbroken items are eligible for return and refund.

- Return requests must be submitted within 7 days of order delivery. We will follow up with the next steps if the return is authorized.

- Authorized returns must be shipped to us within 7 days of the return authorization. We are unable to process refunds for items returned after this period.

- We cannot issue a refund for used items or items that return to us damaged. We strongly encourage you to insure the return package and get tracking.

A refund for the full cost of returned items minus the initial shipping cost will be issued upon receipt of the return package pending items being unused, undamaged, and in new condition.

Customer is responsible for the return shipping cost.

If you are concerned about your packing skills, take the item(s) to a carrier and have them do the packaging.

All seconds items and sales items are final sale and non-returnable.

Exchanges

We do not currently offer an "exchange" process. Instead, you may return items for refund and place a new order for the items you would like.

Damaged in Shipping: What To Do

We take great care in packaging orders to ensure their safe arrival and have a very low-rate of pieces being damaged in transit. Still, breaks happen - pottery is fragile and shipping can be quite tumultuous!

Please check your package thoroughly and promptly upon delivery.

In the unlikely event that any part of your order arrives damaged, please email us and we will work together to resolve the issue.

IMPORTANT: Please send requests regarding damaged items within 3 days of order delivery.

Photographs are required in order for refunds to be issued for items damaged in transit. We cannot honor requests that do not include clear photographs of the damaged pieces and the box the order arrived in.

We ask that you hold on to your damaged items and the packaging until we have resolved and processed the request.

In your email, please include

  1. The order number.
  2. Photos of the damaged item(s) AND the box. Ensure photographs are clear and in focus.

Cooperation

We want you to be happy with your purchase and your experience with Golden Ratio Clay Works. If for some reason you are not, please contact us so we can work together to resolve the issue.

We center cooperation, respect, and kindness in our customer care and hope you will show us the same.

Use and Care

Using Your Pots

Safe for...

(Unless noted as otherwise in a product listing...) Our pots are:

  • Food safe
  • Microwave safe (see note)
  • Dishwasher safe

Microwave note: do not put pieces with hairline cracks in the microwave. Moisture in a crack could cause a piece to break if microwaved.

What about oven-use?

Our pots may be put in the oven for short periods of time at low temperatures, but should not be used for baking.

Please follow these guidelines for oven-use:

  • Do not exceed 300°F
  • Avoid thermal shock - do not put a cold or room temperature pot into an already pre-heated oven. Bring the pot to temperature with the oven.
  • Do not put pieces with hairline cracks in the oven. A hairline crack plus that kind of heat can cause a piece to break. Check for cracks before oven-use.

A Note on Gold Luster

Occasionally, we embellish our pieces with gold luster. Pieces with gold luster should *never* be put in the microwave or oven.

Cutlery Marks

Cutlery may leave metal marks on the surface of your pots.

These can be removed with a cleaning product such as Bon Ami or Bar Keepers Friend. Create a paste with the powder and, with a wash cloth or other non-abrasive sponge (definitely not steel wool!), buff the cutlery marks in a circular motion.

Our Materials + Process

Clay

We use a white stoneware clay and fire to cone 6 in oxidation.

Glazes

Since Golden Ratio's founding in 2017, we have been using commercial glazes for our pottery.

After many months of learning, research, testing, and development, we have formulated our first palette of six custom housemade glazes, launched in 2024. You can read more about them here: OUR GLAZES.

Glazes are typically applied by dipping; some pieces have brush application.

Our Process

Our methods of production include jiggering, wheel-throwing, and handbuilding.

Our dinnerware is made using the jigger and our custom made molds and dies.

Drinkware, vases, and some larger pieces such as large serving bowls and Gathering Boards are made by wheel-throwing.

Other items are made by handbuilding, and some pieces are thrown and altered with handbuilding methods.

Variations: What to Expect

The hand-crafted processes by which our pots are created, as well as the variegated nature of the materials we use to make them, means there will be variations in dimensions, weights, shapes, and glaze presentation. No two pieces will be exactly alike.

In making our dinnerware, we work hard to ensure that pots stack beautifully and that sets harmonize - this is one of the primary reasons we transitioned to using the jigger for dinnerware as we are able to achieve more form consistency using the jigger. Variability is still present with jiggered pieces.

When buying our ceramics, please remember that these pieces are not mass manufactured by machines.

Each piece is lovingly and carefully made by our hands. The subtle differences from piece to piece are evidence of the work our hands did to make them and should be celebrated as one of the unique joys of hand-crafted ceramics.

Volume and Custom

Volume and Custom Orders

If you are interested in a large volume or custom order - for example, a higher volume order of custom branded items - please send us a message. We're happy to consider your inquiry and get a conversation going about if we can take on your project!

Seconds

What Are Seconds?

Seconds are pieces that are flawed but functional; they are offered at a discounted price and are final sale only.

Seconds are functional and food safe.

We don’t want to waste perfectly good albeit flawed pots - we want to honor the time and resources it took to make them, so we offer these seconds at a significant discount.

Examples of Seconds Flaws

Seconds flaws include:

  • Warpage (being out of round)
  • Small cracks on the foot or chips in the footring
  • Glaze flaws or inconsistencies
